Stowgill Chalet

About the area

Stowgill Chalet

The surrounding moors are designated as open access, but because of the presence of sheep, grouse and other moorland birds, dogs are not permitted. It is approximately 2 miles across the fell to the Nine Standards cairns which are nearly the central point of Wainwright’s Coast to Coast footpath. There are several Public footpaths and Bridleways in the area which allow for circular walks of varying length and severity and it is of course now possible to walk across the moorland to England’s highest pub, The Tan Hill Inn, which is a pleasant 5 miles each way on a fine day. (It is usually open all-day so you can get refreshment on arrival).

Other places of interest locally are the market towns of Kirkby Stephen and Appleby, slightly further are Barnard Castle, home of The Bowes Museum, and Hawes, famous for Wenslydale cheese. Kirkby Stephen is also a stop on the famous Settle to Carlisle railway line and it is well worth a trip to Settle by train for the fine views of some of the remoter parts of the Yorkshire dales. Kirkby Stephen is the closest town for shops and is about six miles distant, there are also several pubs and restaurants in the town as well. There are also pubs at Brough Sowerby and Winton which serve food in the evenings.

The Chalet is also ideally placed for visiting the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors National Park.
